Johnathan Smith's Travels in the Dominican Republic
This is what I did for my Spring Break in 2005. Me and my college friends in my hall went here and had a complete blast! It's such a nice place to visit.

Day 1
- Aug 19, 2005
Photo AlbumThis is the travels of myself, Sai, José, Nathan, and El Grant to the Dominican Republic. Be forewarned! We started off the day by getting to RDU around 10 to take our noon flight. All of us except Grant were taking this flight because he had booked later and couldn't get the same flight. Once we arrived all I remember was that Sai was talking on the cell phone the entire time, there was a bird flying inside the terminal, and José showed us his condoms in his bag...
Day 2

Photo AlbumThe alarm I had set woke me and Nathan up, but Sai and José were nowhere to be found. This wasn't so good as we had to leave soon. I called them up to tell them to get their butts back as we were ready. A half hour later they finally came in to finish packing and changing. We took our free taxi to the aeropuerto and stood in line. After making it through, we realized we had that $40 ticket to get food. Unfortunately, McDonald's was the only place open but we mad...
Day 3
- Aug 19, 2005
We hit the streets of Santo Domingo today. We walked along the coast, though it was rocky, it still offered very pretty views. I even tried a coconut from some street vendor, only to be let down. Oh well, it was a very tropical thing to do. The majority of the day, however, was spent in a marketplace. While most of it was normal touristy things, there were a few interesting clothing and music shops. Near here, there was a famous amber museum that we also stopped by. I don'...
Day 4

We went to a beach today. Umm, the water rocked, it was mid march & so warm. There were also beautiful women and I had a cigar for the first time EVER. The end.
Day 5
- Aug 19, 2005
It was pretty darn cool today. We started out by going into an underwater cave. How sweet! The first place we stopped off was this lady's land area. She actually went to college in the US and practiced medicine here for a long time but moved back to the Dominican Republic for her retirement. Kind of strange to be a doctor and live in this shanty part of town off the highway. The opening to the cave was super-professional so we stopped off at this other place to look. It wa...
Day 6
- Aug 19, 2005
Day 5 was spent at a resort called Barceló. We paid $21 US to eat as much as we wanted for breakfast and lunch, AND it included ALL of our drinks. Needless to say, this was a bargain. The first thing was to hit the beach. For a resort, I was pretty impressed, though I thought the other ones we had been to earlier were still nicer. We didn't really want to drink anything as we were very hungry and waiting for lunch. So after a couple hours, they FINALLY started serving lunc...
Day 7
- Aug 19, 2005
We woke up after terrible sleep at the camp site to drive off to a national park, Los Haitises. It supposedly has a bunch of trees that grow only there and a part of Japan as well as cool ruins, caves, and islands. The ride there was SOOOOO long. As we were driving through a checkpoint to get there, station to get the license back. So we kept trudging along, up this v the police gave us a ticket because we had too many people in the car and they took Hernan's (Sai's dad) l...
Day 8
- Aug 19, 2005
Day 8 was one of the most memorable days spent there. We slept a lot into the day because we had little sleep the couple nights previous. So basically we were just around town doing whatever until the evening. While we had gone out another night, we saw that this one place was going to have a $9 open bar. Being college kids, we had to go to this. So that night we went to the "Stop Fire Bar" (it was in English, poorly translated to look cool or something). The entry was onl...
Day 9
- Aug 19, 2005
As usual, we slept in from the night before. Our last day here we didn't do too much. We did finish off our gallon of rum. We hung out by the pool in Sai's grandmother's apartment complex and swam a bit there and ate a bit, but the real food was to come later on. That night we went to Sai's aunt's very nice apartment to have dinner. They had bought a massive pan of paella (spanish dish) that must have been extremely expensive. Not only that, but it was excellent! We had ou...
